The Edward Reeves Archive Project owes a huge debt of gratitude to the many local volunteers whose work makes new and exciting insights into the archive and its contents possible.

THANK YOU to the team of volunteers who continue to key in the crucial details of more than 170 years of business ledgers and documents. The digital transition of these key data sources will reveal over time exactly what is held in the Edward Reeves Archive and will allow us to investigate this wealth of historical insight with precision and purpose.

THANK YOU to the DNA Photo Imaging of Worthing and Le Bureau Lewes for printing the Project’s exhibitions, and to all those who have planned and created these interactive displays. We’re grateful to everyone who assembled the lightboxes that showcase the Edward Reeves Archive’s images, researched the stories behind the photographs and helped manage the sharing of this project to the public. Thanks to their enthusiasm and involvement, the Edward Reeves Archive has become not only the Reeves family’s collection but a ‘Family Album of Lewes’, bringing value to the town and the wider public with every new detail revealed.

PROJECT LEADERS

- Brigitte Lardinois
  Brigitte Lardinois is Reader in the Understanding of Public Photography at the London College of Communication at the University of the Arts in London.
  
  From 1985-1995 she worked as an Exhibition Organiser and Curator at the Barbican Art Gallery where she specialised in the setting up of their photography exhibitions. In 1995 she joined the staff of Magnum Photos to set up their Cultural Department in London. She was involved in many Magnum group exhibitions, notably Magnum Ireland, as well as solo shows for Henri Cartier-Bresson, Martin Parr, Josef Koudelka, Eve Arnold and many others.
  
  In 2006 she moved to London College of Communication at University of the Arts to become a Senior Research Fellow. There she edited Magnum Magnum, the sixtieth anniversary book published by Thames & Hudson in eight languages (currently in its fourth edition). An updated version, published in October 2024, includes the work of the twenty-five Magnum members who joined since the original book was published. She also edited Eve Arnold’s People and an updated version of Magnum Ireland, published in Spring 2020.
  
  She was Director of the Photography and the Archive Research Centre (PARC) at the University of the Arts in London from October 2018–February 2023.
  
  Since 2014, the Edward Reeves Archive project has been her main area of research.
- Tom Reeves
  Tom Reeves began working for the family’s business at the age of thirteen when his father, Edward Mitchell Reeves, was incapacitated by severe strokes. Later studying Photographic Sciences to degree level at the Polytechnic of Central London (previously the Regent Street Polytechnic and now the University of Westminster), Tom took up the profession full-time upon graduating in 1982, incorporating his new technical and artistic expertise into the day-to-day running of the business.
  
  Tom’s photography was initially on sheet and roll film formats from 35mm to 5” x 4”, but the technological revolution of the late 20th century saw a complete changeover to digital capture by 2010. This has given him specialist and in-depth knowledge of many technical aspects of photography, helping Edward Reeves Photography serve customers across all manners of requests today.
  
  Tom runs the business in partnership with his wife, Tania. His work covers a wide range of social and commercial photography, with the archived work of the previous three generations becoming increasingly significant. The sourcing, scanning, and preparation of images from the archive for the Edward Reeves Archive Project forms a significant part of Tom’s work.
- Tania Osband
  After graduating with an Honours degree in Social Anthropology from the University of Kent in 1982, Tania worked for eight years in the central buying offices of a national retail chain, progressing to a senior management role.
  
  In 1990, she became a partner and joint owner of Edward Reeves Photography, alongside her husband Tom Reeves, and began working in the role of Business and Commercial Manager. Together they have developed the business and steered it through the transition phase demanded by the digital revolution.
  
  Since 2014, Tania has worked with Brigitte Lardinois and Tom Reeves on the Edward Reeves Archive Project. As Project and Volunteer Manager and Administrator, she has been responsible for curating many of the Project’s celebrated lightbox exhibitions and other associated events, including leading the planning, administration and choreography of Lewes Remembers in 2017.
